Why do these sometimes bespectacled bookworms play around with formulas and numbers and patterns, seemingly without purpose? Why do they care about things that don’t relate to the “real world?” They play for the same reason we all play. Because it’s fun.

Go read the whole post. It really struck a chord with me.

Sadly, though, many people find the fact that some people find playing with mathematics fun to be both unbelievable and proof of their irredeemable strangeness.

Math-phobia and Nerd-phobia is a real issue in America, I think.
