Gifted Education — Riding on their Coattails
March 11, 2008
Please go read this post at Unwrapping the Gifted. Although I don’t agree 100% with Tamara’s take on having gifted students act as tutors, what she says is important, and I hope people find it outrageous! Both the post itself and the comments tell a sad tale about the education of gifted children in so many NCLB-panicked public schools. 😦

I wish I had a dollar for every time I was asked, as a gifted kid, to “help” my peers. I completely agree with you that peer tutoring can be a valuable learning experience in itself — but that the strategy can be easily misused!
Yes, Yogamum, I think it is misused way too often, which is why parents of gifted kids often have such knee-jerk negative reaction to it. (I’m having a rather lively discussion about it in the comments on my tutoring post, linked above.)
