Free Printable Math Worksheets

January 18, 2008

My six-year-old often asks me to give him math worksheets to work on (for fun!) and there are many places on the Internet to find such things. But I will highlight two of my favorites.

The Math Worksheet Site features generated worksheets for the basic math functions, plus time, measurement, fractions, decimals. graphing and hundred charts. They also have a paid subscription service that gives access to a greater variety of topics (including topics through high school level) and options on the worksheets. Their worksheets look very professional, and are created as PDF files, though you can also get a printable web page if you prefer.

KidZone Math offers a variety of worksheets on topics for kindergarten through grade five, including the basic operations, geometry and word problems. Some are static, but many are dynamically generated (subbing in random numbers of the prescribed size each time) so that you can create many worksheets on the same topic and at the same level, if you so desire. They have cute images on the worksheets as well, which makes them visually appealing to kids

Both sites feature large readable fonts, which seem remarkably rare in many of the other online worksheet sites I’ve seen. The Math Worksheet Site offers more control over the details of the problems (number of digits in the top number, number of digits in the bottom number, etc.) and offers an answer key. KidZone offers themed word problems and more visual appeal (and no answer keys).

I’ll mention one more site I sometimes use when looking for problems for my middle-schoolers: EdHelper — they offer content that includes Middle School math, as well as High School level Algebra (I and II) and Geometry, in addition to preschool, kindergarten, and elementary level materials. But without a paid subscription, you can only see sample problems, and not generate worksheets formatted for printing. I also think that a lot of their worksheets are formatted in a cluttered way with fonts that are too small and too “lightweight” for my liking.
